Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House is officially getting a sequel.

The movie, which was released last year, is a remake of the 1989 film and sees the actor play an ex-UFC fighter who takes on a bouncer job at a Florida roadhouse.

Road House quickly became a huge success for streamer Prime Video – becoming the service's most-watched original movie ever.

In the wake of those big numbers, Prime Video has now confirmed that a sequel is happening, writing on X (formerly Twitter): "With nearly 80 million viewers to date, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as Elwood Dalton in a Road House sequel."

Speaking last month in the wake of Road House's big streaming numbers, Amazon MGM's Jennifer Salke said: "The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film's cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal.

"The world is absolutely loving this entertaining, action-packed ride anchored by the performances of Jake, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Darren Barnet, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Arturo Castro, JD Pardo, and the rest of our stellar cast.

"It's great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences. This incredible film is really giving everyone something to talk about, and we couldn't be more proud!"

Ahead of its release earlier this year, director Doug Liman shared his disappointment that Road House was going straight to streaming, saying he would boycott the premiere – though eventually attended the event.

"If we don't put tentpole movies in movie theatres, there won’t be movie theatres in the future…," he wrote on Deadline.

"Without movie theatres, we won't have the commercial box office hits that are the locomotives that allow studios to take gambles on original movies and new directors. Without movie theatres, we won't have movie stars."

Road House is now available to watch on Prime Video.
