Jaelan Phillips and Jaylen Waddle now under contract for Miami Dolphins for 5th season

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins have officially picked up fifth-year options for edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.

General manager Chris Grier had said they would.

The Dolphins would seem to want to extend Waddle's contract sooner than later as receivers in his draft class, such as former Alabama teammate DeVonta Smith, are signing and driving up the price.

Miami will eventually want to extend Phillips. It's possible both sides may want to wait-and-see a bit as to how Phillips bounces back from an Achilles injury that ended his last season.

Waddle, 25, was the sixth pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Waddle has 3,385 yards and 18 touchdowns over three seasons.

Phillips, 24, was the 18th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Phillips has 22 sacks in three seasons.

The Dolphins have four key players with similar first names on their roster: Jaylen (Waddle, Wright), Jaelan (Phillips) and Jalen (Ramsey).

Tua Tagovailoa is scheduled to play on a fifth-year option in 2024. But the Dolphins are committed to extending him in the near future, too.
