Jacksonville Routt baseball sets school record with sectional title: 1A/2A roundup

BASEBALL

➤ NO. 1 JACKSONVILLE ROUTT 12, NO. 1 DELAVAN 0 (5 innings): At Mendon, Conrad Charpentier ended the five-inning game with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning and Routt recorded a school record in wins to advance to the Class 1A supersectional.

Routt (31-7) plays another top seed in Glen Carbon Father McGivney at the Lincoln Land Community College Supersectional on Monday at 1 p.m. Father McGivney defeated No. 2 seed Greenfield 4-0 to win the Glen Carbon Sectional.

Charpentier finished with five RBIs, adding a sacrifice fly in Routt’s two-run fourth inning. Winning pitcher Brady Turner took command on the mound and went the distance. Turner struck out eight, walked one and yielded just three hits.

Eli Olson opened the scoring for Routt with a two-run home run in the second inning. Turner (2-for-3, three RBIs) contributed a two-run single and Jace Lautemann drew a bases-loaded walk as the Rockets scored three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Routt went ahead 7-0 after four, highlighted on an RBI single by Turner. Routt finished with eight walks and leadoff hitter Nolan Turner had a hit and scored three runs, while Bryson Mossman walked twice, doubled and scored two times in the No. 2 hole.

➤ NO. 1 GIBSON CITY MELVIN-SIBLEY 7, NO. 1 MOUNT PULASKI 1: At Arcola, Gibson City plated six runs in the top of the seventh inning and knocked off Mount Pulaski in the 1A sectional title game.

Gibson City plays Kewanee Wethersfield in the Bloomington Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional at 11 a.m. Monday.

Graydon Leonard held Mount Pulaski to one hit, which came on a bunt single by Tyler Cross that scored Liam Smith in the bottom of the second to give the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. Smith was hit by a pitch and stole second and came home on the bunt and an error by Gibson City.

Leonard didn’t give up much after that and finished with eight strikeouts and three walks. Starter Eric Cooper, who threw 6 ⅓ innings for Mount Pulaski, suffered the loss. Cooper allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Gibson City tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Ty Cribbett, and Zeb Greer was thrown out at home trying to score on the play to keep the game even at 1-1.

Cribbett then came up big in the seventh. He roped a bases-loaded three-run double to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. Brayden Elliott added a two-run single, and he scored the final run after reliever Aaron Volle balked.

Mount Pulaski bowed out at 26-4.    

SOFTBALL

➤ NO. 1 NEWTON 3, NO. 1 GILLESPIE 2 (8 innings): At Greenville, Avery Mulvey’s RBI single with two outs in the top of the eighth inning completed a Newton comeback and the Eagles won the sectional title.

Newton will play top-seeded Carterville at the Johnson City Supersectional on Monday at 2 p.m.

Newton entered the seventh trailing 2-1 and Lexi Grove opened the inning by reaching first on an error. Mulvey walked and after a strikeout, Lilly Kessler walked to load the bases. Audrie Reich then grounded into a fielder’s choice and Mulvey came home after courtesy runner Claire Probst was thrown out at home.

Gillespie pitcher Emma Gipson retired the final batter as the Miners batted in the bottom of the seventh. Laci Schuckenbrock started the seventh with a single and reached third on a sacrifice and a groundout.

But she was stranded at third as Eagles pitcher Amelia Collins got out of the frame to send the game into extra innings. Collins retired Gillespie 1-2-3 in the eighth and she ended with one strikeout, three walks with two earned runs on six hits in a complete-game victory.

Sally Mahaffey gave Newton a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the first inning, and Gipson tied it in the bottom half with a run-scoring double that scored Sadie Sholtis. Sholtis gave Gillespie a 2-1 advantage in the sixth when she singled and drove in Lauren Bertagnolli, who had doubled to begin the inning.

Gipson went all eight innings, striking out seven and walking four. She allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) as the Miners finished the season 29-5.
