Jack Black To Play Key Role In Minecraft Movie

As we’ve seen in recent years, film adaptations of video games are a bit of a hot topic right now. After the success of Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Detective Pikachu – as well as TV series like The Last of Us – it seems like just about anything is on the table. Like, for example, a live-action Minecraft movie, with Jack Black in a leading role.

Warner Bros. announced a little while back that it was producing a live-action Minecraft movie, with Jared Hess – of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre fame – set to direct the feature film. Jason Momoa is set to feature in the film, which is set to start filming in New Zealand soon, and now, according to Deadline, Jack Black will be joining the film.

Deadline’s reporting says that Jack Black will be playing the role of Steve, which is the name of the default character skin in the Minecraft game and who was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch under the same name. It’s not known what role Momoa will be playing, or if Steve is set to be the primary protagonist, but there’s still plenty of time for details to come out.

Black, who previously worked with Hess on Nacho Libre seemingly confirmed the casting on Instagram, with a post showing himself reading a book called “Minecraft Basics.” The caption reads “an actor prepares,” all but confirming he’s been cast in the film, though he stopped short of confirming he’d be playing Steve.

The Minecraft movie has been in the works for quite some time, with Warner Bros. reportedly in talks with Minecraft developer Mojang since early 2014. The film has seen a number of writers and directors attached in the decade since, with Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney, and Peter Sollet all attached to direct at some point. Matt Berry, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Emma Myers will all star in the film.
