Jack Black didn't understand Super Mario Bros Movie's negative reviews

Jack Black has responded to negative reviews for The Super Mario Bros Movie.

Released in April 2023, it featured Chris Pratt as the voice of plumber Mario, with Black playing his arch-nemesis, Bowser.

The movie debuted with a 50% rating on the Tomatometer, with critics left rather underwhelmed.

It came as a bit of a shock, the actor told Total Film.

"They screened it for me a month before it hit theatres. I was like, 'We've got a hit on our hands'. I'm laughing and smiling the whole way through this movie. And then it came out and it got horrible reviews. I was like, 'What movie did they see?'

"Luckily, the world didn't listen to Rotten Tomatoes, and it was one of the biggest hits of all time."

The film, which Digital Spy described as an "Easter egg-stuffed delight", banked $1.3 billion at the global box office and became the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated movie, a record previously held by Frozen II.

Black is currently working on Minecraft but says it is a "different experience" to his time on The Super Mario Bros Movie.

"Live action is a different ball of wax," he said.

A couple of months ago, the actor discussed the likeliness of a Super Mario Bros sequel.

"It has been radio silence," he told the Variety Awards Circuit podcast. "The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don't even know if I'm allowed to chatter. I've been chomping at the bit to get back to business."

Here's what he pitched: "Bowser's Revenge. I think it should be a full musical, like what Todd Phillips is supposedly doing with Joker 2."
