J&C Athletes of the Week: choose between two seniors and two sophomores
WEST LAFAYETTE — Four high school athletes left their mark during basketball games in Greater Lafayette Area between Dec. 11 and Dec. 17.
This talented group of students are being nominated for the weekly Journal & Courier Athletes of the Week award. The candidates were chosen based on fan and parental submissions and observations made by the Journal and Courier sports reporters.
Fans can vote until midnight this Thursday to choose the J&C Athlete of the Week.
Here's a look at this week's candidates that includes two sophomores and seniors.
Aubrey Miller
School: McCutcheon
Sport: Basketball
Class: Sophomore
Team contributions: Miller is quietly becoming a force of confidence for a McCutcheon squad that is putting together wins against quality opponents. Her scoring in the paint and rebounding was critical in leading the Mavericks in two victories over Harrison and Lafayette Jeff. Miller scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds with two assists and two steals to lead Harrison over the Raiders 56-29 last Friday and made critical defensive plays to beat Lafayette Jeff 58-27 last Tuesday. McCutcheon (10-2) has won seven straight games and is winning by an average of 23.6 points during that stretch.
Sara Parkison
School: Clinton Central
Sport: Basketball
Class: Senior
Team contributions: Parkison became the all-time leading scorer in school history last Monday. Parkison scored 25 points and drilled four 3-pointers to beat Class 3A opponent Lebanon 60-34. Parkison is leading the Bulldogs to a 11-1 start. Clinton Central's only loss was on the road to Class 2A Sectional contender Carroll.
Jake McGraw
School: Clinton Prairie
Sport: Basketball
Class: Sophomore
Team contributions: McGraw has been shooting red hot after receiving prominent minutes for Clinton Prairie. McGraw surpassed 1,000 points and scored 27 points with seven assists, six rebounds and four steals to lead his team over Frontier 72-35. The Gophers are 6-0 to start the 2023-2024 season.
Hunter Sisson
School: Benton Central
Sport: Basketball
Class: Senior
Team contributions: Sisson found his offensive rhythm for Benton Central. Sisson scored a game high 22 points to go with eight rebounds in an 80-69 win over West Lafayette last Friday and scored 22 points with six rebounds against Tri-West last Saturday.
