Israel-Hamas war live: Land, air and sea invasion ‘imminent’ after IDF ‘kills Hamas massacre mastermind’

A land, air and sea invasion of Gaza is “imminent” as the Israel Defence Forces killed a top Hamas commander responsible for one of the murderous attacks on southern Israel last week.

The IDF said it was preparing to “expand the offensive” on Gaza by implementing a “wide range of offensive operational plans” including a “joint and coordinated attack from the air, sea and land.”

It comes as the Israeli military said Ali Qadhi, a company commander in the so-called Nukhba unit, was killed in a drone strike on Saturday.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the Israeli airforce said: “Air Force aircraft, under the intelligence guidance of the Shin Bet and Amman, killed Ali Kachi, a commander in the Najaba force of the terrorist organization Hamas, who led a terrorist attack in the settlements surrounding Gaza last weekend.”

Meanwhile, the Pentagon ordered a second aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean Sea “to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts toward widening this war following Hamas’s attack.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appealed for Hamas to release hostages without conditions and for Israel to allow rapid and unimpeded humanitarian aid access to the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

20:50 , Tom Watling

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that the Egyptian-controlled border crossing into Gaza would reopen and the US was working with Egypt, Israel and the United Nations to get assistance through it.

Hundreds of tonnes of aid from several countries have been waiting in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula for days pending a deal for its safe delivery to Gaza and the evacuation of some foreign passport holders through the Rafah crossing.

Egypt said it had stepped up diplomatic efforts to break the impasse.

“We have put in place, Egypt has put in place a lot of material support for people in Gaza, and Rafah will be reopened,” Mr Blinken told reporters in Cairo after what he said was a “very good conversation” with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

“We are putting into place with the United Nations, with Egypt, with Israel, with others the mechanism by which to get the assistance in and to get it to the people who need it,” he added.

On Sunday, the United States appointed veteran diplomat David Satterfield as Special Envoy for Middle East Humanitarian Issues to lead the US response to the Gaza humanitarian crisis.

Middle East war could widen beyond Israel and Hamas, US officials warn

19:50 , Tom Watling

Top US officials warned on Sunday that the war between Israel and the militant group Hamas could escalate into a bigger conflict across the Middle East, saying they were worried the Lebanese group Hezbollah could attack Israel's north or that Iran might get involved.

Another set of US warships was headed to the region in a show of force meant to prevent such escalation.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin announced deployment of a second carrier group late on Saturday, calling it a sign of “our resolve to deter any state or non-state actor seeking to escalate this war”.

The aircraft carrier the USS Dwight Eisenhower will join a small fleet including the massive USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier in the eastern Mediterranean.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told CBS that “there is a risk of an escalation of this conflict, the opening of a second front in the north and, of course, Iran's involvement”.

The comments were echoed by White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who told Fox News that the White House was worried about “a potential escalation or a widening of this conflict”.

The Met Police has launched an appeal to find two women who appeared to wear pro-Hamas imagery to a rally in London on Saturday.

The photo, taken on Saturday, shows two women walking with a depiction of a parachuter stuck to their back with tape.

It is unclear if the depiction was intended as a Hamas tribute or if the two women were aware the images were stuck on their backs.

But the image is an apparent reference to Hamas terrorists who descended on Israeli communities with parachutes and gliders and killed up to 1,300 Israelis.

Two women were spotted wearing an apparent Hamas tribute at a pro-Palestinian march in London this weekend.

The photo, taken on Saturday, shows two women walking with a depiction of a parachuter stuck to their back with tape.

A different video showed one of the women marching with the tribute on her back under a bag strap. It is unclear if the depiction was intended as a Hamas tribute or if the two women were aware the images were stuck on their backs.

It comes after The Chicago Black Lives Matter organisation apologised for posting a graphic seemingly celebrating Hamas’s slaughter of Israelis.

The group, which has more than 60,000 followers, posted an image of a person paragliding with a Palestinian flag attached to its parachute and “I stand with Palestine” written beneath.

The image is an apparent reference to Hamas terrorists who descended on Israeli communities with parachutes and gliders and killed up to 1,300 Israelis.

This morning, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warned people against glorifying terrorism, after major marches across the UK in support of the Palestinian cause.

“Glorifying murder and terrorism is no benefit to the Palestinian people, just as Hamas are not friend to the Palestinian people,” he told Sky News.

Gaza evacuation smelled of ‘blood and death’

11:11 , Alexander Butler

The journey to the south of Gaza tens of thousands of Palestinians have made smelled of “death” and “blood”, a father-of-three said.

Nabil Diab, 49, who is a comedian, said his journey to the south of the besieged territory was “extremely difficult”, “disturbing” and “unnecessary”, Maira Butt reports.

“The move to the south was extremely difficult. It was was excrutiating. Whether it was the smell of blood and death, or the destruction, it was a struggle. It was disturbing, disgusting and unnecessary,” Mr Diab told The Independent.

On Friday, more than 400,000 Palestinians fled their homes in northern Gaza after Israel’s military urged about 1m people to leave for the south ahead of an expected ground invasion.

Families in cars, trucks and donkey carts packed with possessions crowded a main road southward from Gaza City as they fled Israeli airstrikes.

Today, the Israeli Defence Force said it would not carry out “any operations” along the evacuation route between 10am and 1pm Gazan time to allow for safe passage.

Israel must act within ‘international law’, David Lammy says

David Lammy told the Trevor Phillips On Sunday programme on Sky News: “He is entitled to have his own operational desire to see an end to Hamas and we support him in that.

When asked if that support remained if that desire leads to “carnage” that sweeps up innocent civilians he said: “No, we must distinguish between Hamas, a terrorist group, and the Palestinian people.

“International law must prevail and that means that you have to minimise civilian casualties.”

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is entitled to have an “operational desire” to “see an end to Hamas” but must act within international law, the shadow foreign secretary has said.

Palestine protester arrests are question for the police, says Labour

09:32 , Alexander Butler

Labour’s shadow foreign secretary David Lammy has said the question of whether anyone should be arrested at pro-Palestine protests is a matter for the police.

Asked where the limit of free expression on the issue was, Mr Lammy told Sky News:“I think that these are decisions that it’s right that the police make on the ground. Let me give you a distinction: We have to live in a country where people are free to wave their national flag and be proud of where they come from.

“But if you are doing that outside a synagogue, clearly intimidating and harassing, you’re contravening the law.”

Organisers say around 150,000 people marched in central London on Saturday, with thousands more in other cities.

Labour has advised its members not to attend the gatherings. While the protests were generally peaceful, critics have raised questions about some of the anti-Israel signs displayed by a small minority of attendees – and whether they might constitute a public order offence.

Pushed on the matter, Mr Lammy told the broadcaster: “We live in a free society but we do not tolerate intimidation.“I am not here to act as the director of public prosecutions and to make those determinations on the ground. Those are determinations for the police and subsequently the courts.”

Hamas wants to turn conflict into ‘war’ with wider world, Cleverly says

09:19 , Alexander Butler

Hamas wants to turn the conflict in Israel into a “war between the Muslim world and the wider world”, Britain’s foreign secretary James Cleverly said.

He told Sunday With Trevor Phillips on Sky News: “I have said it’s in Israel’s interest to avoid civilian casualties and Palestinian casualties because Hamas clearly wants to turn this into a wider Arab-Israeli war or indeed a war between the Muslim world and the wider world and none of us, including Israel, want that to be the case and so that’s why we do give that strong advice from a position of friendship.”

He added: “I’ve said that restraint, discipline these are the hallmarks of the Israel Defence Force that I want to see and indeed those are the hallmarks of a high-functioning military organisation, which the IDF is - in stark contrast to the terrorist atrocities perpetrated by Hamas.”
