‘Irate’ parent uses pepper spray in ‘bizarre’ attack on school bus, Georgia cops say

A parent discharged a can of pepper spray on a school bus full of children headed to Goodyear Elementary School Tuesday, Aug. 16, Georgia police and school officials say.

Shaquayle Cuyler, 29, was “irate” when she boarded the school bus at around 7 a.m. as it picked up students outside an apartment complex, according to a statement from police and school district officials sent to McClatchy News.

The woman “got into a confrontation” with the driver over something that took place on Friday, Glynn County Schools Police Chief Rod Ellis, told The Brunswick News. The pepper spray was used as the driver and monitor tried to remove her from the bus, Ellis said. “It was just absolutely bizarre,” Ellis told The Brunswick News. “It is unlawful to just board a bus like that.”

The two adults, as well as 24 students on board, were exposed to the pepper spray.

The bus driver and monitor were sent to the hospital, officials said, and the schoolchildren were treated by medics on scene before being transported to the elementary school on another bus.

Cuyler was charged with battery, criminal trespassing, cruelty to children, disrupting a school bus, reckless conduct and interference with government property, according to arrest records.

Police and school officials told McClatchy News that the incident is still under investigation.

Brunswick is about 70 miles north of Jacksonville.
