Do Iowans know taco pizzas? Watch a blind test of Taco John's, Casey's and Happy Joe's

You’re craving tacos. You’re craving pizza. In the words of an Old El Paso commercial turned meme, why don’t we have both?

A newer player in this tasty, chaotic culinary universe is Taco John’s.

The fast food chain's taco pizza is made of a corn and wheat flour crust topped with refried beans, seasoned beef, tortilla chips, a four-cheese blend, Fiesta sauce and topped with lettuce and tomatoes.

Iowans love their taco pizzas, but can we recognize our favorites just by taste?

Three Des Moines Register reporters did a blind taste test to find out.

The Des Moines Register tastes three taco pizzas. Which is which?

The goal was to see whether participants could correctly identify which slice of pizza came from which restaurant. Participants were told only that the three pizzas sitting on a table were from Taco John’s, Casey’s and Happy Joe’s Pizza, but not which slice came from which restaurant.

Trending reporter Paris Barraza only correctly identified the Happy Joe’s Pizza. Her preference? Casey’s.

General assignment reporter Victoria Reyna-Rodriguez identified all three pizzas correctly. How? She said she knew what a gas station pizza looked like.

Plus, Taco John's pizza looked exactly like the restaurant's tacos. And tasted like them, too, making it her favorite.

Metro jobs reporter Kevin Baskins mistakenly chose Happy Joe’s Pizza as Taco John’s.
