The MCU has been in a bit of a bad shape lately, with recent films flopping a bit at the box office and Marvel needing to rework the next Avengers film after Jonathon Majors’ verdict was returned in court, finding him guilty of assault and harassment. Now, it seems like phase six of the MCU has hit another snag, after Steven Yeun reportedly exited an upcoming film.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Steven Yeun, perhaps best known for his leading role in Invincible, will no longer be involved in the upcoming Thunderbolts. Yeun was reportedly to be involved with the film as of February 2023, but was never officially announced to be in its cast.

Steven Yeun rose to fame for his role as Glenn Rhee in The Walking Dead, before receiving critical acclaim performing in films like Nope, Minari, and Sorry to Bother You. He’s also taken to voice acting, having voiced characters in Voltron: Legendary Defender, Netflix’s Tuca & Bertie, and Tales of Arcadia.

His most prominent role in recent years is as lead character Mark Grayson – Invincible himself – in Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible. The series wrapped up the first half of its second season late last year, with the second half set to premiere sometime soon.

It’s unknown why Yeun stepped away from the Marvel role – THR doesn’t provide a reason or speculate, and we won’t either – but it’s hard to say how much of an impact it will have. Thunderbolts is set to feature a number of other characters from the MCU, most of whom are reformed villains.

Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan are set to reprise their roles as Yelena Bolova and Bucky Barnes, respectively, and Thaddeus Ross, previously portrayed by William Hurt, will feature in some capacity too, this time played by Star Wars actor Harrison Ford.

Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to be released on July 25, 2025.
