Making money off old coins is a booming opportunity. Some people have made literal millions off of this numismatic trade. For example, according to Smithsonian Magazine, in 2021, a seller made a record-breaking $18.9 million on a 1933 Double Eagle, an American coin. But you needn’t stay with the boundaries of the U.S. when it comes to collecting coins with the aim of selling them.

Let’s look at these international coins that are worth thousands (or far more), according to American Bullion.

1925 Swiss 100 Francs

Not many of these coins were minted in 1925, a fact that makes them quite rare and valuable — if in good condition. Look for the head of a woman on one side and the Swiss cross circled in a wreath on the other.

1804 British George III Dollar

These silver dollars tout an image of King George III on the head side (obverse) and a seated Britannia on the tails (reverse). When in top-notch condition, you could nab thousands of dollars for these at auction.

1911 Canadian Silver Dollar

This coin is the epitome of rarity, with only three known to exist. Known as the “Emperor of Canadian Coins,” one of these exceptionally rare coins sold for over a million dollars in 2010.

1982 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin

Minted in rare .900 fine gold, this coin, which features the Mexican coat of arms on one the head side and the Winged Victory on the reverse, can bring in a fine purse at auction. It’s the most recent coin on this list, which could make it easier to find.

1970 South African Krugerrand (Proof)

Another relative newbie in the coins department is this 1970 South African Krugerrand in proof finish. It also has an interesting history: It was the first bullion coin in the world designed for investment purposes, and just 10,000 were minted, making it a prime buy for collectors (if in high grade condition).

1937 Edward VIII Sovereign

Here’s another example of a coin of which only a few exist. It stands out because it was never even released into circulation thanks to Edward VIII’s abdication, and tops the list of valuable British coins.

1912 Australian Gold Sovereign

With not many minted back in 1912, this coin sports the profile of King George V and collectors will fork up a fortune for it based on its rarity.

1314 Double Leopard Florin

The oldest coin on this list, the Double Leopard Florin is also one of the rarest, with only three existing. One sold at auction for over half a million pounds!

10,000 Yen Japanese Gold Coin

This rare gold coin is not only valued by collectors based on its rarity, but also on its aesthetic appeal. It features a gorgeous rendered and deeply detailed design with the Showa emperor, Hirohito, on the obverse side.

1913 Russian Nicholas II Ruble

This rare coin from 1913 features Tsar Nicholas II and the Russian Imperial eagle. When in great condition, buyers flock to nab this unique and valuable gem of old currency.
