Insidious: The Red Door has hit another box office milestone, becoming the highest-grossing horror film of 2023.

As reported by Deadline, the Blumhouse Productions movie – which has only been in theatres for a month – has garnered $182.5 million at the global box office to become the Insidious movie to earn the most money in cinemas.

It also surpassed Universal's M3GAN, which was previously 2023's highest-grossing horror film with a worldwide box office total of $180 million.

The Red Door follows on from the first two Insidious movies, with stars such as Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye and Leigh Whannell all returning.

The fifth instalment brings back the Lambert family, who kickstarted the horror franchise back in 2010.

It is directed by Patrick Wilson, who also stars in the franchise as Josh Lambert. However, Wilson wasn't always keen on the idea of making his directorial debut with this picture.

"I didn't know if I wanted to feel like I was stepping into the shoes of who I think is two of the greatest creators in Leigh [Whannell] and James [Wan] who have defined horror for me in the past 15 years," Wilson told Digital Spy.

"It became this great lesson in filmmaking because I was able to be surrounded by people who do it so well. When they have confidence in themselves and in you, then it's a good working relationship."

Wilson's gamble, though, has certainly paid off – particularly at the box office. That record is impressive due to the box office power of Barbie and Oppenheimer. Barbie, in particular, is breaking several records.

Insidious: The Red Door also beat Indiana Jones 5 at the box office, although the horror film did receive a low score of 39% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
