Inland Lakes baseball, softball go perfect, capture home tournament championships

INDIAN RIVER – The Inland Lakes baseball team had a stellar Saturday, going unbeaten at its home tournament with a 5-1 victory over Charlevoix, an 11-2 win over East Jordan, and a 3-0 triumph over Manistique.

I-L's Connor Wallace was the winning pitcher against Charlevoix, striking out six in three no-hit innings. Aidan Fenstermaker tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out four and allowing a hit.

Fenstermaker led the Bulldogs’ offense with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Ty Kolly recorded two hits and two runs scored, Jake Willey had a double, two RBIs and a run scored, and Cash DePauw chipped in with a hit.

Willey had a big game against East Jordan, tallying two hits, three RBIs and two runs for the Bulldogs, who received hits from Wyatt Hanel (RBI, run), Kolly (run), Wallace (run) and DePauw (run). Payton Teuthorn scored twice.

DePauw earned the win on the mound, striking out two and allowing two hits over three innings. Collin Maves also pitched, striking out a batter and scattering two hits.

Elijah Perkins had a clutch pitching display in the final game against Manistique, earning the win with eight strikeouts and three hits allowed in 5 1/3 strong innings. Garrett Shovan pitched in relief, striking out one.

Kolly’s hit and two runs scored led I-K offensively. Fenstermaker had a hit and Logan McMullen tallied an RBI.

Inland Lakes (13-0, 6-0 Ski Valley Conference) hosts Gaylord St. Mary in a Ski Valley doubleheader on Monday.

Offense keys Bulldogs to outstanding 4-0 day

INDIAN RIVER – The Inland Lakes softball team went 4-0 and captured its home tournament title at Cooperation Park on Saturday.

After winning their opening three games, the Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 11-10 victory over East Jordan in the championship. Jenna Stubbs homered, singled and knocked in a run, while Erica Taglauer had two triples, Brooklyn LaBrecque tripled and singled, Lexi Kovtun doubled, singled and had an RBI, Lakyn Thompson and Eva Carper each added a single and an RBI, and Maggie Grant and Adyson Fenstermaker both recorded two singles. Grant was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 and allowing seven hits in six innings.

“Overall, we had a great day,” Inland Lakes coach Krissi Thompson said. “The girls played well and hit well. Very proud of them.”

In a 13-1 opening win over Charlevoix, Kovtun homered and finished with five RBIs, Grant had two singles and two RBIs, LaBrecque doubled, singled and knocked in a run, Stubbs recorded two singles and an RBI, Taglauer tripled and singled, Carper doubled and Thompson singled. Grant registered the win, striking out six and allowing just one hit in five innings.

LaBrecque’s double, two singles and three RBIs lifted Inland Lakes to a 15-5 triumph over East Jordan earlier in the day. Kovtun and Thompson each had three singles and Myla Thompson doubled. Kovtun was the winning pitcher, striking out seven and allowing three hits in four innings.

Kovtun also earned the win in a 23-0 victory over Manistique, striking out three in two no-hit innings. Grant tossed one inning, striking out two and allowing a hit. Alexis Langworthy homered, singled and knocked in a run, Lakyn Thompson had three singles, a double and an RBI, Hayden Wager tripled and added three RBIs, Grant doubled, singled and knocked in two runs, and Kovtun doubled and singled.

Inland Lakes (9-5, 4-2 Ski Valley Conference) hosts Gaylord St. Mary on Monday.

Cheboygan baseball splits games at Hillman tournament

HILLMAN – It was a mixed bag for the Cheboygan baseball team at Saturday’s tournament in Hillman.

Despite suffering a 13-8 loss to Brimley in their opener, the Chiefs (8-11) bounced back with a 16-1 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell in their second contest.

Against Lake Linden-Hubbell, Blake Blaskowski led Cheboygan’s offense with two hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jacob Seaman had a hit, an RBI and three runs scored. Other Cheboygan players adding hits were Sean Postula (two RBIs, run), Evan Blaskowski (RBI, two runs), Brennan Bradley (RBI, two runs), Dylan Balazovic (double, RBI) and James Charboneau. Luke Munger (RBI, run), Chase Swanson (two runs) and Nolan Schley (run) also contributed to the win.

Charboneau was the winning pitcher, striking out six and allowing three hits in three innings.

Postula’s two hits, an RBI and a run scored paced the Chiefs against Brimley. Bradley (three RBIs, run), Schley (RBI, run) and Seaman (run) tallied a hit apiece. Blake Blaskowski, Patrick Smith and Munger each scored a run.

Schley took the loss for Cheboygan. Relief pitchers adding strikeouts were Charlie Godfrey (four), Blake Blaskowski (two) and Swanson (one).

Cheboygan travels to St. Ignace on Monday.

Cheboygan softball wins one, drops two down in Midland

MIDLAND — The Cheboygan softball team competed at the Midland Dow tournament on Saturday, picking up a victory but suffering a pair of defeats against strong competition.

Cheboygan earned a 6-0 victory over Farwell in its second game of the day. Leading the way for the Chiefs (15-9) was senior pitcher Emerson Eustice, who struck out four, allowed five hits and walked three in seven shutout innings.

Tessa Lake’s two hits and an RBI sparked Cheboygan’s offense, which received two hits, an RBI and a run scored from Eustice, a triple, two RBIs and a run scored from Marley Couture, a hit and two runs scored from Presley Chamberlain, and a hit and a run scored apiece from Libby VanFleet and Amelia Johnson. Ella Kosanke had a hit.

In an 11-3 loss to Lansing Catholic in the opener, Chamberlain had two hits and scored a run, Johnson tallied a hit and two RBIs, Couture added a hit, an RBI and a run scored, and Eustice recorded a hit and scored a run. Jordan Ashley and Lake both registered a hit.

VanFleet was the losing pitcher, striking out two, allowing 10 hits and walking one in six innings.

The Chiefs saw their day end with a 9-1 loss to Lakeville, as Emily Clark (double) led with two hits. Ashley had a hit and Kosanke scored a run.

Ashley took the loss, striking out three, allowing four hits and walking three in 1 2/3 innings. VanFleet threw 5 1/3 innings of relief, striking out five, scattering eight hits and walking one.

“We ran into some good competition down there, but that’s what we’re looking for as we prepare for districts,” Cheboygan coach Mike LaLonde said. “The pitching down there was very good. Every team threw close to 60 (miles per hour), so we’ve got to get used to hitting that stuff. All in all, a good weekend. The girls made some nice plays.”

Cheboygan will get some much-needed rest before hosting Sault Ste. Marie in a Straits Area Conference doubleheader on Thursday, May 2.

Cardinals continue solid run, hammer Lake Linden-Hubbell

ONAWAY — The Onaway baseball team stayed hot on Friday, rolling to a 14-4 victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell.

Austin Veal (triple, three RBIs, three runs) and Anthony Santiago (double, two RBIs, two runs) recorded three hits apiece for the Cardinals (8-3), who won for the sixth time in seven games.

Adding two hits was Cole Selke (three runs), while Gavin Green (two RBIs), Luke Lovelace (two runs), Andrew Gulley (double, RBI), Jadin Mix (RBI) and Justin Kramer-St. Germain each had a hit.

Mix was the winning pitcher, striking out five and allowing five hits in three innings. Veal tossed two innings in relief, striking out two and scattering three hits.

Onaway hosts Mancelona on Monday.
