In his first game with the Washington Football Team, quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has already had to leave the field with an injury.

Fitzpatrick took some massive hits in the first quarter and a half of this afternoon’s contest against the Los Angeles Chargers. After one such lick, he got up gingerly and headed to the sideline with the training staff.

Fitzpatrick was replaced by Taylor Heinicke, who famously made his first career start as a rookie last year in the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We’ll see if Heinicke is in for the rest of the day or if Fitzpatrick can return.

It wasn’t like he was setting the world on fire before getting banged up. The 38-year-old gunslinger was just 3-of-6 for 13 yards passing.

Heinicke misfired on both of his passing attempts after taking over for Fitzpatrick. Overall, it has not been a strong start for the Washington offense against a stingy Chargers defense.

If Fitzpatrick can’t return today, his status for Week 2 immediately comes into question as well. Washington is hosting the New York Giants on a short week on Thursday night, making it a quick turnaround for any player dealing with an injury.

Update: Ryan Fitzpatrick has officially been ruled out.
