Indianapolis crime: Rumors of money and a botched robbery lead to guilty plea years later

INDIANAPOLIS — A Warsaw, Indiana man charged in the 2022 robbery that ended in the death of a 31-year-old has entered a plea.

On Friday, Stephen Cartwright, 44, pleaded guilty to murder in the killing of Medhat Saad nearly two years ago. Indianapolis police found Saad with gunshot wounds near the front door of a home on the northwest side of the city.

According to court records, Ring video footage from the home captured Cartwright and his alleged accomplice, Madison Fowler, at the home leading up to the shooting. Police in court records said Cartwright was identified in the footage bearing a unique tattoo on his forearm and is seen approaching the home holding a firearm.

After being taken into custody, court records state Fowler identified herself and Cartwright in the video and indicated they planned to rob the home, in the 7000 block of Bretton Wood Drive, after being told rumors about a substantial amount of money inside.

Marion County prosecutors are seeking a 45-year prison sentence for Cartwright. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 17.

A jury trial for Fowler is scheduled to begin May 20. Fowler faces charges of murder, two counts of burglary and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.
