Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s podcast “Wiser Than Me” debuted in last April 2023 and, over the course of the past year, the Seinfeld and Veep star has spoken with some absolute legends — including comedian Carol Burnett, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, and singer Darlene Love.

The podcast’s second season started earlier this month and, in the most recent episode, Louis-Dreyfus welcomed the Barefoot Contessa herself, Ina Garten, introducing her as a woman who “has been dishing out fabulous recipes and a s--- ton of charm for decades.”

The conversation between the two was an absolute delight, covering their respective relationships with food, the overlap between science and cooking, and how to address the growing problem of food waste. Early in the episode, though, Louis-Dreyfus asks Garten what a “typical eating day” looks like for her.

Garten responds by sharing her “orderly” food choices, explaining that she has to have a cup of tea with honey every single day at “exactly 10:30 [a.m.].” Then she and her husband Jeffrey have soup for lunch before they either go to a restaurant or to friends’ houses for dinner.

“I’ve been testing recipes all day,” Garten said. “The last thing I want to do is make dinner.... That’s work, and this is dinner.”

In addition to her daily cuppa and soup lunches, Garten said that she serves herself the same breakfast daily too. “I pretty much have toast and coffee,” she explained. “And the toast has to have good French butter on it with shaved sea salt. It’s called beurre de baratte with flaked sea salt, and it’s just so delicious.”

If you want to start your day the way Ina Garten starts hers — and who doesn’t? — this magical butter is produced in Normandy by acclaimed French cheese-and-butter maker Rodolphe Le Meunier. According to the company’s website, the butter is traditionally produced in a wooden butter churn and hand-molded into 250-gram, hockey-puck-sized servings. “This ancestral technique is the guarantee of a high-quality butter, a taste like no other,” the company says.

Rodolphe Le Meunier’s Beurres de Baratte, which translates to “churned butters,” are available in unsalted, lightly salted, and flavored varieties — and can be purchased from a number of online retailers. Unsurprisingly, premium French butter also comes with a premium price: Each foil-wrapped butter puck sells for between $12 and $23 online.

If that’s a little too luxe, Garten has also praised a more modestly priced butter. In response to a question posted on her website, Garten once said that she often uses Cabot Creamery butter to cook with, before adding that “there are many good brands of butters available.”
