Ikea recalls espresso makers after they scalded customers and caused hearing damage

Espresso makers should make hot coffee, not burn the person making it. That’s why Ikea recalled about 7,500 Metallisk Espresso Makers in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall alert: “The recalled espresso makers with the stainless-steel safety valve can burst and expel hot contents, posing burn or other injury hazards to consumers.”

That’s not an idle concern. The alert says Ikea has “received 16 reports worldwide of the espresso makers bursting, including four reports of burns, scald injuries and hearing damage.”

This covers the Metallisk coffee makers with the stainless-steel safety valve for cooktop units with date stamps (found on the bottom) from 2040 through 2204. You can return them to any Ikea store for a full refund (no receipt required) or send them back with a prepaid label.
