IIHF Women's World Championship live updates: USA vs. Japan in final quarterfinal

🏒🏒🏒 With pool play complete, the IIHF Women's World Championship moves onto its knockout round with quarterfinal play Thursday involving eight of the 10 teams, all five teams from Pool A and three from Pool B. The United States plays Japan in the nightcap, the latest starting game of the tournament at 8:30 p.m.

Thursday's game set the matchups for Saturday's semifinals, as well as the fifth place game that determines the final spot for Pool A in next year's tournament in the Czech Republic.

Play starts at 10 a.m. Thursday with the game between Finland and Switzerland determining the opponent for the winner of US/Japan. Germany, undefeated in Pool B, takes in Czechia in the second game, and Canada plays Sweden in the game that will finalize the second semifinal matchup

Game 4: USA vs. Japan

Team USA plays the quarterfinal nightcap against Japan with the winner playing Saturday at 3 p.m. against Finland.

Game 3: Canada 5, Sweden 1

Canada, the stingiest defensive team from pool play at the Women's World Championsip meets Sweden, the highest scoring one, in the third quarterfinal Thursday at the Adirondack Bank Center.

Sweden scored 17 goals while winning three of four games in Pool B. Canada, on the other hand, allowed two in its four games in Pool A, and one was in overtime of the team's only loss.

The winner advances to semifinal play Saturday against Czechia, a 1-0 winner earlier over Germany.

Czechia beats Germany 1-0 with third period goal

Daniela Pejsova scored past the midway point of the third period to break a scoreless tie, and Czechia advanced to the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship semifinals with a 1-0 win over Germany.

Germany, the top team from Pool B, had not previously been beaten in the tournament at the Adirondack Bank Center. Czechia won its second conscutive game after starting play in Pool A 1-2 with back-to-back losses to the United States and Canada.

Czechia committed a penalty in the first period, Germany had one in the second, and the two power plays and a 20-9 Czechia shot advantage summed up the offense for the first two perios.

Czechia finished with a 24-17 edge in shots, and goalie Klara Peslaova made 17 saves in her second shutout of the tournament. Sandra Abstreiter made 23 saves for Germany.

The zeroes hung on the scoreboard for almost 53 minutes until Pejsova scored her second gol of the tournamnt at 12:54 with assists from Aneta Tejralova and Michaela Pejzlova.

The win sends Czechia to Saturday's semifinals for a possible rematch with Canada which plays Sweden Thursday evening. Canada defeated Czechia Sunday

Finland beats Switzerland for second time at tournament

Finland is the first team in the International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship semifinals following a 3-1 win over Switzerland in Thursday's first quarterfinal at the Adirondack Bank Center.

Finland, the fourth place finisher in Pool A, had previously beaten Switzerland 5-2 in pool play Monday. Switzerland has not won a game in the tournament.

The win puts Finland in Saturday's 3 p.m. semifinal against the winner of Thursday's final game between the United States and Japan.

How to get tickets

Tickets for most of the IIHF Women’s World Championship games, including all of the quarterfinals and both semifinals, are still available and can be purchased by visiting 2024.womensworlds.hockey/tickets or stopping by the Adirondack Bank Center box office.

The gold-medal game, scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, April 14, is sold out. If the United States wins Thursday, it would play the 3 p.m. semifinal Saturday.

How to watch the games at home

In the United States, all games will be broadcast on NHL Network, including its streaming service. For international viewers, fans can catch the games on the following networks/streams:
