IHSAA reclassification: Where do Bloomington area school's stand?

Changes are coming. The Indiana High School Athletic Association officially announced its classifications for boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, and girls volleyball for the next two school years, with the appropriate success factors figured in.

The divisions adhere to the new plan that places the largest 20% of schools in Class 4A, the next 25% in Class 3A, the next 25% in 2A and the smallest 30% in Class 1A. The four-class sports divisions will be based on the entire membership total which effectively keeps sectional alignments similar across each sport. Football (six classes) and soccer (three classes) are excluded.

Edgewood will see the biggest effects of the changes, but North and South could also see a change to its sectional lineup with Greenwood falling to 3A and powerhouse East Central pushed up to 5A after consecutive state titles.

Sectional assignments (except for softball and baseball) will be announced later this spring. Softball and baseball sectional assignments will be released in August.

Edgewood football drops to 3A

Edgewood goes from one of the smallest in 4A back to the seventh largest in 3A. Also in 3A are Owen Valley, Indian Creek and West Vigo. Given the number of 3A teams south of Ellettsville (Washington jumped to 4A, as did Danville, and Bishop Chatard), the Mustangs and/or Patriots are likely to be paired with schools from the west side of Indianapolis. There are just seven in the Evansville area, so OV could be pulled south as they have been before.

East Central's presence in 5A could change things up. If Floyd Central, New Albany, Evansville North and Castle remain paired up, Whiteland and Franklin, Seymour and Columbus East are the closest schools to the Trojans. Lafayette Jeff also drops to 5A while West Lafayette Harrison moves to 6A. Last year Harrison and McCutcheon were paired up with Decatur Central and Plainfield. Terre Haute North and South are also 5A.

Bedford North Lawrence, Northview, Mooresville and Martinsville remain in 4A. Monrovia, Mitchell, Linton, Brown County and Paoli remain in 2A, with powerhouses Indianapolis Lutheran and Lafayette Central Catholic moving up to join them.

And in 1A, Forest Park and North Knox are dropping in from 2A. Eastern Greene was in a seven-team sectional last year that could add the Rangers.

Bloomington South’s Andrew Elsesser (12) goes to the basket against Greenwood’s Parker Doolin (35) after a steal during their IHSAA boys’ basketball sectional first round game at Bloomington North on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024.

Ups and downs for area schools

When it comes to basketball and volleyball, BNL will be the third smallest school in 4A as the 79th biggest.

Greenwood (82nd) drops to 3A, while West Vigo (189), Monrovia (196), Brown County (205) and South Vermillion (213) fall to 2A, where Eastern Greene and North Knox will be among the 10 smallest. Barr-Reeve is falling back from 3A to 2A in volleyball only.

Cloverdale and North Daviess are now in 1A. Lighthouse Christian will be the eighth smallest boys basketball program and the fifth smallest for girls.

Class 3A will see an influx of schools from Indianapolis or south of the state's capital in addition to Greenwood: New Palestine, Cathedral, Crispus Attucks, Jennings County, Evansville Central, Shelbyville, Jasper and Roncalli. Evansville Mater Dei, Cardinal Ritter, Salem and Pike Central are falling to 2A. Riverton Parke, North Decatur, Henryville, Hauser and Providence are now in 1A.

Jasper and Evansville Memorial are moving up to 3A in girls' soccer, while Roncalli is now the biggest 2A school.
