Idris Elba to star and direct new survival thriller with After's Hero Fiennes Tiffin
Idris Elba is set to star in and direct new thriller Above the Below from Lionsgate.
The independent survival thriller – which will also star Succession's Caitlin FitzGerald and After's Hero Fiennes Tiffin – will see a trio of astronauts endure a very bumpy re–entry to Earth.
After a "chaotic and destructive" crash landing back on the planet, they find themselves off course and in the middle of the ocean; their capsule begins to sink to unfathomable depths, and another battle for survival starts.
Elba will star as mission commander Jackson, with FitzGerald as co-pilot Brooks and Fiennes Tiffin as Rhodes – an astronaut on his very first mission.

Lionsgate Studio has acquired the worldwide rights to the project, which began filming last week at Pinewood Studios (via Hollywood Reporter), and is based on a script from Martin Owen.
Above the Below's script was developed by Future Artists Entertainment; its CEO, Matt Williams, said in a statement: “Working with the U.K.’s best and brightest in the industry on this complex and thrilling shoot, we are creating a thrill-ride movie that takes us from the Earth’s outer atmosphere to the very depths of the ocean.
"This is filmmaking at its most challenging and most exciting. With Idris and Martin at the helm, Above the Below is shaping up to be an unforgettable movie experience about the extremes of survival, against all odds!”

In a separate statement, Lionsgate's president of global sales Helen Lee Kim said: "Partnering with Idris, Martin and their superstar filmmaking team is a spectacular opportunity to deliver a non-stop roller-coaster ride of a movie for our 2024 slate.
"Idris, Hero and Caitlin are three magnetic actors who bring incredible depth to their roles and will undoubtably have us rooting for their survival from beginning to end.”
