A 2016 action movie featuring Luther star Idris Elba and Game of Thrones' Richard Madden has become a huge hit after landing on Netflix.

Bastille Day, also known as The Take in some countries, was added to the streaming site on July 15 and has proven popular amongst viewers — ranking in the top 10 most-watched films of the week for both the UK and New Zealand (via WhattoWatch).

The film sees Elba star as CIA agent Sean Briar, tasked with preventing a terrorist incident in modern-day France. Madden plays pickpocket Michael Mason, who finds himself caught up in the plot after stealing a handbag containing explosives.

After wrongly being labelled a security threat, Michael is hunted down by Agent Briar before the pair discover that the bomb is actually a decoy for a bank heist and wider governmental conspiracy.

In addition to Madden and Elba, the film also stars Charlotte Le Bon, Eriq Ebouaney and José Garcia.

Despite its newfound popularity on Netflix, Bastille Day struggled to make an impression upon its initial run. The film's French release was scrapped after the 2016 terror attacks in Nice. Bastille Day also received a mixed response at the time from fans and critics alike, sitting at under 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film's resurgence could also be in response to Madden and Elba's star power, with both actors starring in high-profile shows.

After Game of Thrones, Madden has appeared in the 2021 Marvel film Eternals and starred alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the spy series Citadel.

Meanwhile, Elba can currently be seen leading the Apple TV+ thriller series Hijack, playing the role of expert negotiator Sam Nelson onboard a plane overtaken by terrorists.

Bastille Day is currently streaming on Netflix UK.
