Idris Elba has addressed the chances of a second Luther film being released.

The popular series received a Netflix feature film adaptation last year which saw Detective John Luther break out of prison to hunt a vicious serial killer terrorising London whom he failed to catch once.

After apprehending the villain, played by Andy Serkis, Luther was put back behind bars. However, it seemed a sequel could be on the cards after an MI5 agent offered him a mysterious job.

Following The Fallen Sun's release there has been no news of a second instalment, with Elba addressing rumours of a follow-up in a new interview.

"The chances are good. The chances are very good actually. I don't want to make any exclusive announcements, but it's looking good for old Johnny Boy," he told Collider while promoting his new role in Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off series Knuckles.

He added that he is not working on a script, and suggested that the project is in its very early stages only.

The Hijack actor has previously expressed his keenness for a second Luther film being released, saying he has his "fingers crossed" for a Fallen Sun sequel.

"It did really well. Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement since it was the first film from the television show. I'm hoping to make another one," Elba told Collider last year.

"I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed."

Elba has also said the first film could kickstart an entire franchise similar to James Bond, where different actors take on the role of John Luther.

"It's not a competition, but I reference Bond as a template for the type of film we're going for," he shared in a recent interview. "John is a leading character in a film that he's the hero of. That's the comparison I'm making. Some films do them well – Bond is one of them.

"But my ambition for it is to have that sort of scale, that reverence. I want people to be like, 'Ooh! Luther, the first film? Wicked'. And to continue that. And then maybe later down the line, when I'm too old, someone else will step in to play John."

Luther: The Fallen Sun is available to watch now on Netflix.
