‘Hypnotizing house’ tied to iconic architect is up for sale. See why people love it

Screen grab from Zillow

A mid-century modern home with a strong connection to arguably the most famous architect of all time has landed on the market in Racine, Wisconsin, for $265,000 — which is a very low number considering the name attached is Frank Lloyd Wright.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has the look and feel of Wright’s previous works, was designed by his protege, John Randal McDonald, and is considered to be “a piece of history,” the listing on Zillow.com says.

McDonald, like Wright, had a vision that often rendered his projects more like works of art rather than simply buildings.

Houses don’t have to be square,” McDonald told the Clearwater Sun, according to JohnRandalMcDonald.com. “They don’t have to be round. The architect should first create a silhouette. He should then execute that silhouette in beautiful materials – the rough texture of stone, the grain of wood, or a shaft of sunlight – creating his own sense of shape and form …. abandoning the standardized.”

McDonald became known for designing Wright-inspired homes, like this one in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

The Racine home, which is over 2,100 square feet, caught the attention of Zillow Gone Wild, a popular Facebook page and Twitter account that highlights unique homes for sale, and people were transfixed.

“I love FLW’s homes and mid century modern homes. I want to build one,” one person commented.

“I’m obsessed,” another gushed. “If only it were in Chicago.”

“I bet it was magnificent when new,” someone said. “I hope whoever buys it will give it the TLC it deserves and restore it instead of just tearing it down and putting a soulless McMansion in its place.”

“Absolutely fantastic potential!!!! I love it! Heck, a pressure washer would do wonders to start,” one person noted.

My dream home exists,” another tweeted.

“Other than the front face looking like a post office, very hypnotizing house,” someone said.

Racine is about 25 miles south of Milwaukee.
