Ben Affleck has landed himself with an unwanted record after his new movie, Hypnotic, became his and director Robert Rodriguez's career-worst wide opening in theatres.

Hypnotic opened up to a measly $2.4 million dollars from their wide release over the weekend of May 14-16, despite opening in 2,118 movie theatres. This is the worst nationwide opening of any picture directed by Rodriguez or any film starring Affleck.

Written by Rodriguez and Max Borenstein, the movie follows Affleck as a detective who investigates a mystery surrounding his missing daughter and a covert government program. The film co-stars Alice Braga, JD Pardo, and Jackie Earle Haley.

These opening takings is made even worse by the fact that the movie had a reported budget of $65 million dollars. So the film currently stands to lose tens of millions of dollars.

The movie had a tricky road to theatres after production company Solstice Studios, who was supposed to handle its marketing and release, began to derail. Their previous movie, Russell Crowe's Unhinged, did fairly well in theatres as it released during the pandemic.

Oscar-winner Affleck previously starred as Bruce Wayne/Batman in several DC projects, while he was rumoured to be set to direct his own Batman movie.

However, with a revived DC Studios now under the part-control of James Gunn, Affleck has ruled out ever directing a movie in the franchise.

"I would not direct something for the Gunn DC. Absolutely not," Affleck said.

"I have nothing against James Gunn. Nice guy, sure he's going to do a great job. I just wouldn't want to go in and direct in the way they're doing that. I'm not interested in that."

Hypnotic hits UK cinemas on May 26.
