The day after spending $1.25 on a drink at Starbucks, a woman went into the store and requested a refund, according to police in Oklahoma. But when a worker told her she’d have to contact corporate, the woman said she was going to have her husband come talk to the store.

Moments later — at about 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 18 — the husband walked into the Edmond Starbucks and demanded a $1.25 refund, according to a report from the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Again, the employee said he wouldn’t give them the money, authorities reported.

The worker turned his back on the 61-year-old man, who took $1 from the tip jar on the counter and left the store, police said. A customer alerted the worker to the theft.

The 34-year-old employee followed him to the parking lot, authorities said, and the man got into the driver’s seat of his Kia SUV.

As the employee stood behind the SUV to take a photo of its license plate, the husband backed the vehicle into him, according to the police report.

“The vehicle struck (the worker) pushing him backwards,” police said. “After (he) was pushed backwards, (the man) backed into him one or two more times.

“Despite being struck by the Kia, (the employee) managed to take a photo of the back of the car,” police continued. “The photo clearly showed the license plate and an advertisement for a business.”

Starbucks did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News on Dec. 20.

Oklahoma City police officers were called to the Starbucks regarding “an assault with a dangerous weapon” at about 5:20 p.m. that evening, officials said. The worker, who did not report any injuries, used Facebook to track down the man through the business advertisement on his SUV.

Meanwhile, police said they found the man at his home in Harrah. The man was arrested after he answered the door, police said.

He was charged with first-degree robbery and assault and battery.

Edmond and Harrah are part of the the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, northeast of the city.
