Hurricane Hilary live updates: Category 4 storm aimed at Southern California threatens year’s rain in one day
Southern California has been issued its first-ever tropical storm watch as “large and powerful” Hurricane Hilary takes aim at Mexico and the region over the next 48 hours.
The National Hurricane Center says that the watch is unprecedented for the region and Hilary is expected to bring heavy rain and the risk of flash flooding from the Baja California peninsula all the way north to Nevada.
As of Friday, the hurricane was located about 360 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph.
“It is rare — indeed nearly unprecedented in the modern record — to have a tropical system like this move through Southern California,” Greg Postel of the Weather Channel told CBS News.
The last time a tropical storm hit California was 1939, before they were even given names and the state has been hit by sub-tropical storms in the years since. Forty-five people died in that storm, most from drowning.
The hurricane is expected to hit Baja Mexico over the weekend and weaken and arrive in Southern California as a tropical storm on Sunday evening.
“Right now, it’s looking like we’ll still have a tropical storm when it moves into Southern California, but it’s going to be weakening pretty quickly,” said meteorologist Brandt Maxwell, of the National Weather Service.

Hurricane Hilary is causing abnormal wave patterns across the West Coast.
Kevin Wallis, director of forecasting at the wave prediction firm Surfline, told NBC News notable swells were observed in the usually tranquil Sea of Cortez, and groups of waves were spotted moving parallel to Southern California, moving past San Diego County.
The US Coast Guard has said waves as high as 8 feet could hit California throughout the storm.

Many cities, like Huntington Beach, offered sand bags to help protect structures.

Preparations for flooding should be ‘completed as soon as possible'

Federal forecasters are warning people in the path of Hurricane Hilary to finish their flooding preparations “as soon as possible.”
“In the Southwestern US, the potentially historic amount of rainfall is expecteed to cause flash, urban, and arroyo flooding including landslides, mudslides, and debris flows,” the National Weather Service said in a briefing on Saturday.

Hurricane Hilary continued its journey towards the Baja peninsula and Southern California on Saturday, as officials warned that the storm could bring unprecedented rain and flooding to the normally arid Southwest.
“Make no mistake,” Nancy Ward, director of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, said on Saturday in a news conference. “This is a very, very dangerous and significant storm.”
“There will be power outages across Southern California,” she added.
The heart of the storm, which began Wednesday in the waters off Manzanillo, Mexico, was 285 miles frmo Punta Eugenia, Mexico, and about 640 miles south-southeast of San Diego, California, as of Saturday afternoon.

Meteorologists have warned that heavy rainfall could potentially turn Death Valley National Park into a massive lake, AccuWeather reports. Death Valley, the hottest place on earth, is expected to receive more than its annual two-inch rainfall, prompting major flooding and flash floods, the park said in a statement on Friday.

Hurricane Hilary causes MLB to reschedule multiple games

Major League Baseball has rescheduled three different series involving teams in Southern California as Hurricane Hilary heads towards the state.
The inclement weather, which is expected to bring rain, heavy winds, and flooding throughout the Southwest, impacted three Sunday series: the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the San Diego Padres; the Tampa Bay Rays versus the Los Angeles Angels; and the Miami Marlins versus the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The games will all be played on Saturday instead.
“I’m very grateful that they were proactive in the thought,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told ESPN.com. “It’s certainly going to be an inconvenience for some people that had Sunday tickets, but to at least get ahead of it made sense to me. ... This is crazy. A hurricane, Southern California, this is very unprecedented, clearly. I just want to make sure we get ahead of it, people get safe and it passes us by.”

When Hurricane Hilary makes landfall it is expected to weaken and move into Southern California as a historic tropical storm, dumping large amounts of rain in the region.
The state’s Death Valley National Park could see up to four inches of rain, which is four times the amount it gets each year.
That amount of rain could result in a temporary lake being formed in the park, which is the country’s hottet, driest and lowest place, according to reports.
It would not be the first time that this phenomena has happened, according to AccuWeather.
In 2019, flooding created a 10-mile lake in the park, and in October 2015 kayakers were able to paddle arou d the park when 1.3 inches of rain fell. Paddlers also got a chance to go out on a temporary lake in March 2005 when heavy flooding created a giant lake.
