Hundreds of cows rounded up after barn fire in Polkton Township

POLKTON TWP. — Multiple fire departments and local residents worked in tandem to rescue cows from an extreme barn fire in Polkton Township on Wednesday, May 8.

Responders arrived at the dairy farm on 56th Avenue around 10:19 p.m. Fire had broken out on the east side of a “large agricultural building” with cows still inside, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

When OCSO arrived, the facility owner, employees, responding deputies, fire personnel and area citizens were working to rescue animals. “Multiple cows” were able to escape the fire and were rounded up, OCSO said.

There were no reports of any injuries to humans.

In addition to OCSO, responding agencies were Coopersville/Polkton Fire, Wright-Tallmadge Fire, Allendale Fire, Ravenna Fire, Moorland Township Fire, Chester Township Fire and LIFE EMS.

The origin of the fire is still under investigation.
