Humana, the Louisville-based health insurance company, told its employees on Monday it will close its downtown Humana Building on West Main Street and consolidate its workforce into the Humana Waterside and Clocktower buildings.

The Waterside building, which sits in front of the Ohio River and Waterfront Park, was renovated to motivate people to come back into the office, The Courier Journal previously reported. The company believes between this campus and the Clocktower building, they will be able to accommodate employees and provide more amenities.

"The Waterside Clocktower campus, it's a very modern facility, and we believe in terms of where we're going as a company, making sure our spaces create energy and there's plenty of opportunity to collaborate for people to gather, Waterside really fits the future vision that we see from our spaces," Douglas Edwards, senior vice president of enterprise associate and business solutions, told The Courier Journal on Friday.

Where is the Humana Waterside building located?

The Humana Waterside building is located at 101 E. Main St. with a view of the Ohio River and Waterfront Park.

What amenities does the Humana Waterside building have?

Brad Keller, the associate vice president of workplace strategy for Humana, previously said the Waterside campus looked like it belonged in 1991 before the pandemic.

"The cafeteria was incredibly small for the scale of resources that we had here, and it was small for the amount of resources we had here," Vicki Perryman, the company's senior vice president of consumer and provider services and solutions, previously said.

"The biggest need was that and collaboration space," she said. "And so we had been pushing pretty hard to figure out what we could do to give people the opportunity to have better food options and a better experience working together."

Here are some of the improvements the building received:

  • New meeting rooms and co-working space.

  • Improved desks and monitors.

  • Private lactation suites.

  • Addition of a hair salon.

Why is Humana moving to its Waterside building?

Edwards said the Waterside and Clocktower buildings are larger and offer employees modern amenities.

He also said the buildings have more space to fit its Louisville workforce when they are not working from home. Roughly 25% of the company's workforce come to the downtown offices at any given time of the week, officials said.
