Human foot found floating in hot spring at Yellowstone National Park

A human foot still inside its shoe was found floating in a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park, officials said.

A park employee discovered the severed body part on Tuesday in Abyss Pool, located in the West Thumb Geyser Basin in the southern part the park. An investigation into the matter is ongoing, but no foul play is suspected at this time, according to a Parks and Services statement released on Friday.

“Evidence from the investigation thus far suggests that an incident involving one individual likely occurred on the morning of July 31, 2022, at Abyss Pool,” according to the statement.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. No further details were provided.

Abyss Pool is approximately 53 feet deep and the temperature can climb to as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors at the park are told to remain on the boardwalks and trails in thermal areas, where some of the pools and springs have a thin crust covering the scalding and sometimes acidic water.

Since 1890, at least 22 people have died from hot spring-related injuries in and around the 3,471-square-mile park, according to officials.
