Hull man arrested after leading police on miles-long chase. What we know

QUINCY – A Hull man was arraigned Friday morning in Quincy District Court following a Thursday police chase that ended with his arrest inside the ski rental office at the Blue Hills resort in Canton, authorities said.

The eight charges include receiving a stolen vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident (three offenses), operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, failure to stop for a police officer and operating a motor vehicle recklessly.

The man was held without bail on a probation violation. He was convicted of a motor vehicle larceny charge Nov. 15 and given a one-year suspended sentence, according to Assistant District Attorney Perry Gans.

About 2:45 p.m., an undercover Quincy police officer ran the plate of a white Chevrolet work van in the area of Franklin and School streets, which showed the vehicle had been reported stolen in Brockton on Wednesday, Gans said.

Officers from Quincy's Drug Control Unit then positioned cruisers behind and in front of the van. When officers exited their cruisers and identified themselves, the man reversed the van, striking the cruiser behind him, then accelerated, striking the passenger side of the cruiser in front of him, Gans said.

As the man drove forward, he struck the front bumper of a Jeep, pushing it into the flow of traffic, Gans said. She said two people in the Jeep didn't require medical attention.

The collision caused the Jeep to strike a pole, according to the report.

The Chevrolet struck a Dodge van on the Water Street Bridge as the driver fled with police in pursuit, driving on three wheels, presumably due to damage sustained in the three collisions.

Police chased the man on Furnace Brook Parkway and entered Route 93 southbound at the rotary, Gans said. According to the police report, the man drove in the breakdown late of Route 93 and exited onto Route 28 northbound toward Milton.

State Police joined the search, and the vehicle was found crashed into the entrance gate at the Blue Hills Ski Resort in Canton, Gans said. One of the officers saw the man running from the van to the area of the ski rental office.

Multiple objects were retrieved at the scene, including the man's Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance card; two glass tubes, believed to be crack pipes; and a receipt from Motel 6 in Brockton, from which the van was reported stolen.

According to the report, the man was tracked down in the ski rental office, arrested and transported to Beth Israel Hospital in Milton for evaluation.

Michael Rosenblatt, the man's lawyer, said his client suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and serious substance abuse disorders.

"Today, he told me he recently has taken methamphetamine and cocaine," Rosenblatt said. "He was not in his right mind."

Rosenblatt asked that his client be committed to Bridgewater State Hospital, a locked facility, for treatment. "The treatment he needs is inpatient treatment," Rosenblatt said.

"(He) has no regard for the court or for the police," Gans said, noting the man led a miles-long chase and has a probation record going back to 1992. Eight restraining orders have been requested against him from six different people, she added.

Rosenblatt argued that Gans' $7,500 bail request was excessive given that his client receives Supplemental Security Income. Judge Maurice Flynn set bail at $1,500. Flynn ordered the man held until his next hearing on Dec. 19 due to the probation violation.

Flynn also ordered an evaluation of the man in the jail infirmary for mental health and substance abuse issues.
