HS musicals this week: 'Fiddler,' 'Urinetown,' 'Into the Woods,' 'Addams' and ABBA

All of the musicals on high school stages across the Lower Hudson Valley this week touch on family to one degree or another.

There's the straightforward "Fiddler on the Roof," about a Ukrainian dairyman with five daughters who is watching his traditions succumb to the modern world.

A new honor: Awards to spotlight HS non-musical plays in Lower Hudson and beyond

There's the quirky "Urinetown," about a dystopian society where (spoiler alert) Bobby Strong watches his father suffer in an age when people have to pay for the privilege to ... um ... pee. (It's also about a daughter and her father, if you need more family ties.)

Ava Pursel is The Baker's Wife, Jeremy Tam is The Baker and Kady Finegan is Little Red Ridinghood in Pelham Memorial High School's production of "Into the Woods." Performances at 7:30 p.m., April 12, 13; 2 p.m., April 14.

Then there's "Into the Woods," with a slew of family connections: A Baker and his Wife; Cinderella and her stepfamily and her prince; Jack (of Beanstalk fame) and his mother and his cow, Milky White; Little Red Riding Hood and her granny; Rapunzel and her family; and two princely brothers who are in agony, and then in agony again.

If you like your families altogether ooky, there's "The Addams Family," based on the Charles Addams cartoon that inspired the campy TV series, the campier films and this musical.

Finally, there's a complicated family, in "Mamma Mia!," where a confused girl plans her wedding, entirely unsure of which of her mother's former beaus should lead her down the aisle.

Families, amirite?
