Houston Astros legend J.R. Richard, one of the best players in the organization’s history, passed away on Thursday. He was 71 years old.

Richard spent 10 seasons with the Astros, spanning from 1971 to 1980. He went 107-71 with a 3.15 ERA and 1,493 strikeouts throughout his career. In 1979, Richard recorded 313 strikeouts in one season, which stood as an Astros’ record until it was broken by Gerrit Cole in 2019.

“Today is a sad day for the Houston Astros as we mourn the loss of one of our franchise icons, J.R. Richard,” the Astros said in a statement. “J.R. will forever be remembered as an intimidating figure on the mound and as one of the greatest pitchers in club history. He stood shoulder to shoulder with club icons Larry Dierker, Joe Niekro and Nolan Ryan, to form a few of the best rotations in club history.”

Richard’s illustrious career was cut short in 1980 when he suffered a stroke during pregame drills. Despite the shortened career, Richard is still recognized as one of the best players in Houston’s history.

J.R. Richard was one of the best pitchers of his generation. The 6-foot-8 right-hander dealt a 100-plus MPH fastball and fooled hitters with a ridiculous breaking ball.

Richard might have gone on to be recognized as one of the best pitchers in baseball history had his career not gotten cut short. Regardless, he leaves behind a tremendous legacy within Major League Baseball.

We wish all the best for Richard’s family and friends during this difficult time.
