House Speaker Pelosi will run for re-election to Congress
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Tuesday that she is seeking another term in Congress, ending speculation that she might retire after having represented San Francisco for more than three decades.
"While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial: nothing less is at stake than our Democracy," Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a tweet.
“I am running for re-election to Congress and respectfully seek your support,” she said in an accompanying video, adding in the tweet that her goal is "to deliver For The People and defend Democracy."

Pelosi, 81, did not say whether she would seek another term as the Democratic leader in the House. She indicated in 2018 that this would be her last term as speaker.
Pelosi became the first woman to serve as House speaker in 2007 and held the post until 2011, when Democrats lost their majority in Congress. She led Democrats under the eight-year Republican majority that followed and secured enough support to become speaker again in 2019.
Democrats face an uphill battle defending their majority in the midterm elections. So far, 29 House Democrats have announced they won't seek re-election.
An NBC News poll released Monday indicated that Republicans are more enthusiastic about this year's elections. The poll found that 61 percent of GOP respondents said they are very interested in the coming midterms, compared to 47 percent of Democrats.
Pelosi is expected to win re-election easily in her heavily Democratic district. In 2020, she won with over 77 percent of the vote in the general election.
