House of the Dragon spoilers follow.

House of the Dragon star Matt Smith may have accidentally revealed the show's season two release window.

The actor, who plays Daemon Targaryen on the Game of Thrones prequel, spilled the beans during an interview on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show – ahead of the show's confirmed return later this year.

When asked by the Radio 2 host when fans can expect to see the Targaryens back on screen, Smith said: "August, I think... this summer, yeah."

The former Doctor Who star went on to reveal that despite finishing filming last year, the next instalment isn't quite ready yet. "I've not seen any of it yet, but we finished it last year. So we've gotta do all the ADR and all that business," he explained.

Following on from the shock ending of the first season, which consisted of 10 episodes, season two will be condensed to eight "jam-packed" instalments.

"There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour," director Claire Kilner told The Hollywood Reporter last year.

"Ryan's [Condall, showrunner] decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they're jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events."

As well as Smith, Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke are set to return to the Seven Kingdoms as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower, respectively.

Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans will also reprise their roles, as well as some new additions. They include Slow Horses' Freddie Fox, Raised by Wolves' Abubakar Salim, Penny Dreadful's Simon Russell Beale and GLOW's Gayle Rankin.

Paddy Considine will not return as King Viserys for season two, following his tragic death in episode eight.

House of the Dragon airs on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Season 2 will be released in summer 2024. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
