The hottest days ever recorded in Rochester history: See the scorching records

The year's three hottest days took place this week, with the heat topping at 89 degrees on Wednesday.

The weather may have felt steamy - and indeed it was unseasonably warm for a mid-May day - but the day was nowhere near the hottest in Rochester's history. Heck, it wasn't even a daily record high.

In Rochester's weather almanac, six days have been recorded at 100 degrees or hotter. And all of those days occurred in three years, 1911, 1936 and 1953.

Rochester NY temperature reaches 102 degrees in 1936

The hottest days ever recorded in Rochester history landed a day apart in 1936. On July 9 and 10, the mercury reached a blistering 102 degrees. The July 1936 heat wave was far more serious than four straight days of records highs — including these two 102-degree days. From July 7 to 14, 1936, 17 people in the Rochester region and hundreds nationwide died from the high heat, according to newspaper accounts.

By midday July 9, it was so hot that Rochester's clothing factories closed at noon, letting 10,000 workers enjoy a half-holiday after temperatures inside the factories climbed as high as 110. An estimated crowd of 40,000 swarmed the sands of Ontario Beach Park and Durand-Eastman beach. Thousands also slept on the beach by the sand, relishing in overnight lows in the 80s.

Rochester NY temperature reaches 101 degrees in 1911

Over a century ago, on July 5, 1911, the record high reached 101 as the warmest day on a five-day heat wave that struck the northeastern United States, and claimed the lives of more than 500 people.

Rochester NY temperature reaches 100 degrees in 1953

Three days — July 3, 1911, July 8, 1936 and June 21, 1953 — reached the 100-degree mark in Rochester's history. The record-breaking day in 1953 followed an overnight storm that left many residents south and east of Rochester without power or phone lines and emptying flooded basements following an electrical storm. According to newspaper archives, the sticky heat drove thousands of area residents to beaches and parks for respite. More than 16,000 people sought to beat the heat at Ontario Beach Park alone. Even though it was nearly 71 years ago, June 21, 1953 was the last time the temperature in Rochester officially reached 100.
