This hotel in a SC tourist town ranks as one of nation’s best. Why people love it

A South Carolina hotel ranks among the best places in the nation for visitors to stay, a new report finds.

The French Quarter Inn — located in the vacation hot spot of Charleston — ranks No. 9 on a list of accommodations that visitors loved the most, according to results published May 23 from the travel website Tripadvisor.

On Tripadvisor, several people who stayed at the French Quarter Inn raved that the hotel gave them a sense of luxury near popular tourist attractions. Others were fans of the food and drink perks, such as champagne upon arrival and cookies before bed, helping the property earn five out of five stars.

In addition to boasting one of the nation’s “highest-rated overall” hotels, South Carolina was home to several places that made their marks in unique categories. Those included:

To determine the Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards winners, Tripadvisor said it studied posts that U.S. hotel guests made on its website in 2022, focusing on “the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings.”

“To be eligible for an award, a property, business, destination or point of interest must have been listed on Tripadvisor for at least 12 months, must receive a threshold number of reviews within the evaluation period of that award, and must maintain or exceed a minimum ... rating on Tripadvisor,” though some categories have more specific criteria, the website wrote.

When accounting for the top 25 in each category, Charleston had a total of six ranked hotels. That means it had the most “unique winners” of any city in the country, according to figures shared with McClatchy News via email.

The honors might not come as a surprise, as the website said Charleston “was named one of the most popular destinations for 2023 in the U.S. in Tripadvisor’s previous destination awards, proving that travelers not only frequently visit, they love, and rate highly on Tripadvisor. Plus, Charleston hotels frequently rank in Tripadvisor’s hotel awards, so they consistently deliver excellent service and hospitality to their guests.”

Overall, the nation’s top-ranking place to stay was the Perry Lane Hotel in Savannah, Georgia. Rounding out the top five favorites:

  • Hotel Madera in Washington, D.C.

  • The Lancaster Hotel in Houston, Texas

  • Acqualina Resort & Residences On The Beach in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida
