Hot market for Finger Lakes homes: These are 2023's top-selling lakefront homes in Steuben

While the real estate market cooled a bit in 2023, there was no drop in demand for Steuben County’s waterfront homes in the scenic Finger Lakes.

An analysis of the latest available county real estate data, through mid-December, found 10 waterfront homes sold for $700,000 or more in 2023. The market topped out at $1.5 million. Just under 20 lakeside homes in Steuben County sold for $450,000 or more.

Most of the homes were located on Keuka Lake, with a few on Waneta Lake.

“Nothing sat stale on the lake,” said Mark Costanza, president of the Elmira-Corning Regional Association of Realtors. “There were multiple offers on multiple properties. There’s still plenty of buyers in that range as well.”

The Association tracked an overall 25% decline in total sales closed in 2023 compared to 2022, fueled by higher interest rates and low inventory. The lakefront segment of the real estate market remained strong, though.

“It’s always in demand,” said Constanza. “I didn’t see much of a change in that market other than the norm of being less (properties) available. For the majority of the people who are spending that kind of money, that’s not their first house so they’re well in tune with dealing with the rates and waiting for the right time.”
