New Hornell 'bin store', J&K Plus Seven, features Walmart, Target, Amazon merchandise

A former pet store in Hornell's downtown business district is now the place for savings on brand name merchandise.

Discount variety store J&K Plus Seven opened April 13 at 24 Seneca St., the former site of Wild & Wet Pets. Store hours are noon to 6 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday.

J&K Plus Seven is a "bin store." This is how it works: Most of the store's merchandise is laid out in four bins. Customers browse overstocked or returned merchandise from Amazon, Target and Walmart. The bins feature a wide selection of household goods, toys and personal care items; think hair straighteners or air purifiers.

Products in the bins retail from $1 all the way up to $100. Each piece is priced for $10 on Saturday. The price drops to $7 on Sunday; Monday is $5 day, Tuesday is $3 and bin items cost $1 on Wednesday.

Store owner Kari Coons posts dozens of photos of remaining merchandise on the store's Facebook page each day, allowing customers to get a look at what is still available and a reminder of that day's bin price.

J&K Plus Seven also has some shelved merchandise. These items retail for over $100. There are savings available with the retail price and the lower store price that customers pay listed on all merchandise.

The store also features a separate area for some clothing, mostly women's and children's, and a selection of shoes.

J&K Plus Seven is closed on Thursday and Friday for restocking, and then it's back open Saturday with all bin merchandise priced at $10.

J&K Plus Seven owner opened Pa. store in January

Coons started off buying pallets and selling items individually online. Then last December, she went to Osceola, Pa. to pick up a pallet but ended up buying the business.

Coons opened Busters Bins & Pallets in January. The Osceola store's opening and success indirectly led to the Maple City store.

“A lot of people kept on saying, ‘I wish you were closer, because we are from (the Hornell area),'” Coons said.

Kari and her husband Jeremy drove around Hornell scouting for a place to a locate a store. They found what they were looking for at the former pet store.

“We decided to throw some bins in and see how it goes down here," Kari Coons said.

Coons said the store had consistent business on its first Saturday and then Sunday was a very busy day. A store banner for the Seneca Street entrance was set to go up soon.

“I am hoping that the word got out now," she said.
