Hollyoaks has cast West End star Iz Hesketh in the soaps upcoming car crash storyline.

While specific details about Hesketh's character are yet to be announced, the E4 soap has confirmed that she will make her first appearance on-screen during an hour-long episode which will be available to stream on Monday, January 15 on Channel 4.

The character can be briefly seen in the soap's January trailer, running away from the scene of a car crash before the camera cuts to a distressed Thersea McQueen. Theresa is desperately trying to get the attention of firefighters Leela Lomax and Joel Dexter.

Confirming the casting on Instagram, the soap shared two images of Hesketh (who uses she/they pronouns) in character and referenced her brief appearance in the trailer with the caption: "So why is she fleeing the scene?"

Hollyoaks bosses had previously teased Hesketh's character, saying they have "a big secret" that will play out during the aftermath of the crash throughout 2024.

Sharing the big news to their own Instagram account, Hesketh wrote: "Looks like the cats out of the bag… I'm so proud to announce that I’m the new girl on the block in the @hollyoaksofficial Village!

"My character is one that British TV has needed for a long time. She's fiery, independent and has a huge heart. I’m so excited to show that trans people are just like everyone else."

They added: "We have flaws, we fall in love and sometimes we make bad decision for good reasons…Brace yourselves, a new arrival is about to come into Hollyoaks with a bang."

Prior to joining Hollyoaks, Heskirth had played the role of Margot in a West End production of Legally Blonde as well as touring in a stage production of The Book of Mormon and appearing as Kaia in ITV2 series Buffering.

Elsewhere in the dramatic trailer, Mercedes McQueen's love triangle with Felix Westwood and Warren Fox reaches its climax as Felix reveals he's aware that his fiancée has been cheating on him before the high-stakes crash.

Ste Hay and daughter Leah will also find themselves caught up in the crash while Nancy Osborne also returns to the village.

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
