Hollyoaks has aired some devastating scenes for Leela Lomax – now Leela Dexter – tonight (May 24), as she receives some heartbreaking news.

Following her mostly-secret wedding to Joel Dexter in the previous instalment, Leela wondered why she hadn't felt the baby move in a while.

This latest episode opened with her calling the maternity ward just for some peace of mind, and they said since she was 27 weeks, she had to drink something fizzy, eat a snack, and have a lie-down.

Later, Leela felt like nothing had changed and headed to the hospital without waking Joel.

She was put on a fetal heart monitor, and she chatted and joked with the nurse about parenthood and how much trouble young boys can be, but the mood turned when the results were unclear. A doctor was brought in for a second opinion and recommended an ultrasound.

While performing the ultrasound, the doctor quickly realised that there was no heartbeat.

"I'm so sorry. Your baby has passed away," the doctor said. Leela could only breathe heavily in response, followed by the soap cutting to silent credits.
