Holland Patent sophomore wins state wrestling title, plus more NY wrestling results

ALBANY - Holland Patent sophomore Andrew Juliano marched through the 101-pound bracket at New York's Division II tournament over the weekend and won the Golden Knights' seventh individual state championship.

Juliano was one of three Section III wrestlers to win titles in the two divisions of competition, joining Copenhagen teammates Chase Nevills and Tavian Camper.

Seeded fifth heading into Albany's MVP Arena, Juliano defeated three of the four wrestlers seeded ahead of him and avenged his only loss to a Division II opponent this season. He captured his championship Saturday evening with a second period pin of Jakob Lucinski, a senior seeded second from Section VI Newfane in Western New York.

Juliano won a 10-8 decision in his first Friday match, setting up a rematch with Colin LoGalbo, the Little Falls eighth-grader who had pinned him in Section III's championship match two weeks earlier. Juliano got the better of Friday's match and advanced to Saturday's semifinals with a 5-2 decision over the No. 4 seed.

Mason Tanner from the combined Jodan-Elbridge/Port Byron/Union Springs/Cato-Meridian team had beaten the No. 3 seed Friday and joined Juliano to give Section III two spots in the 101-pound Final Four along with the top two seeds. Tanner had finished third at the sectional tournament where Juliano had beaten him in overtime.

Juliano pinned Declan McKee, the No. 1-seeded freshman from Section IV Tioga, in overtime, while Lucinski, a fourth-place finisher at last year's state tournament, defeated Tanner 9-3. Juliano recorded another pin at 3:07 af the championship match.

With the win, Juliano joins Alex Herringshaw and Hunter Richard, the won of coach John Richard, as state wrestling champions at Holland Patent. Herringshaw and the younger Richard each won three titles over a four-year span starting a decade ago.

Golden Knight Trent True, Section III's Division II champion at 190 pounds, placed seventh in Albany with a quarterfinal loss Friday to the eventual state champion, Greyson Meak from Section VIII Cold Spring Harbor.

Foster finishes second

Joining Juliano in the Division II finals was another Tri-Valley League standout, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill senior Charlie Foster, a third-time sectional champion. Seeded third at 170 pounds, Foster advanced to the semifinals with a technical fall and a pin Friday, both in the second period.

Foster earned his title shot with a 13-4 major decision over Tavyn MacDonell, the No. 2 seed from Section V Bolivar-Richburg and the runner-up at 160 pounds last year, in Saturday's semifinal. Braidon Woodward, another Section V wrestler from Palmyra-Macedon, was the No. 1 seed and defeated Jack Lamson from Jordan-Elbridge/Port Byron/Union Springs/Cato-Meridian in the other semifinal. The once-beaten Woodward then defeated Foster 5-1 in the title bout.
