Holland Christian edged by point for regional title; HC, Hamilton, Holland qualifiers

FRUITPORT - The Holland Christian girls came within one point of winning a regional championship in a stellar performance.

In the girls meet, Holland Christian was second with 99, just one point behind Hudsonville Unity Christian on Thursday at Fruitport. Holland took fifth with 54 and Hamilton finished sixth with 40.

The top two in each event qualified for the state finals, along with any other competitor who reached a qualifying standard during regionals.

Holland Christian's Eliana Stob won the 1,600 meters in 5:21.19. Teammate Ellery Lampen won the 3,200 in 11:48.33.

Holland Christian's Olivia Hollebeek took second in the 400 (59.84).

Adelyn Halma, Avery Brower, Chloe Chesser and Abbe Baas took second in the 4x100 (50.41).

Stob, Baas, Grace Fenton and Hollebeek took third in the 4x400 (4:14.04) to qualify.

Stob, Layla Geurink, Lampen and Hollebeek won the 4x800 in 9:51.93.

Chesser finished second in the long jump (16-4 3/4).

Hamilton's Aliyah Springer won the discus (138-1) with a personal best and school record. She also took second in the shot put (35-1) to qualify. Teammate Bella Tamminga took second in the pole vault (10-3) to qualify.

Holland's Madalyn Daniels just missed the 100 meters with a third-place finish (12.97) but rallied to take second in the 200 in a personal-best 26.36 and qualify for state along with teammate Miona Rodgers (26.72) who also bested the qualifying mark.

Holland's Alba Rodriguez-Lima took third in the 100 hurdles but was fast enough to qualify for state (16.31).

Rodriguez-Lima and Holland Christian's Camryn Siegers each reached 5-1 in the high jump to qualify.

Hamilton boys take second, HC fourth

The Hamilton boys finished second in the region with 88 points, while Holland Christian was fourth with 73. Whitehall won the meet with 105. Holland was eighth with 45.

Hamilton's Ben Boehm won the 100 meters in 10.93 to qualify for state. Boehm also took second in the 200 meters in 22.26 to qualify.

Hamilton's Abatu Dykstra won the 800 in 1:58.29 to qualify for state.

Josh Langeland took third in the 400 meters but his 50.07 reached the qualifying standard. Hudsen Hulst took third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.54) to qualify.

Hamilton's Gabriel Schrotenboer, Austin VanderKamp, Jeren Bronkhorst and Boehm took second in the 4x200 relay to qualify (1:30.51). Dykstra, Schrotenboer, AJ Friedriechsen and Langeland took second in the 4x400 (3:25.42) to qualify ahead of Holland Christian's Josh Bruxvoort, Landon Gerritsma, David Van Duinen and Brody DeKruyter (3:31.42), who also qualified.

The Maroons took second in the 4x800 with Nathan Steen, Van Duinen, Aidan Brinks and Will Engbers (8:11.60) ahead of Langeland, Ben Dykstra, Carson McIntire and Dykstra (8:13.18) who also qualified.

Holland's Noah Lambers finished second in the 1,600 meters (4:23.15) to qualify for state.

Holland Christian's Will Engbers reached state with a second-place finish in the 3,200 (9:36.62). Lambers took fourth (9:43.42) but was fast enough to qualify for state in a second event.

Holland's Willem Evenson won the pole vault in 13-6 to qualify. Holland Christian's Nathan Bengelink took fourth (13-3) and also qualified.

Holland Christian's Joe Strabbing took second in the high jump (6-0) to qualify.

Holland Christian's Isaiah Myaard won the long jump (21 4 1/2) to earn the regional title and qualify for state.
