Hole in Fleckney road repaired after plastic duck protest

A two-month-old hole in a Leicestershire road has been filled after villagers used plastic ducks to protest over long-standing roadworks.

Unidentified residents floated two ducks in the flooded hole in Fleckney earlier this week after becoming frustrated it had been left unrepaired since early March.

Villagers had joked the pair would have had ducklings before repairs were finished.

The hole was fixed on Thursday.

National Grid said it had discovered a leaking water main, near the junction of Main Street and High Street, while carrying out repairs to a cable.

The company said it reported the leak to water firm Severn Trent.

Nick Plews, who posted pictures of the ducks on the Fleckney community Facebook page, said he knew the identity of the protester who deployed the ducks in protest but that they wanted to remain anonymous.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: "The blockage was cleared on Wednesday and the road was reinstated by National Grid.

"Severn Trent teams have some investigative work going ahead during the weekend and a meeting with the Highways Agency has been arrange for next week."

Temporary traffic lights, in place during the roadworks, have been removed.

The whereabouts of the ducks remains unclear.
