A construction worker was seriously injured when she fell roughly 50 feet from a bridge in Connecticut, officials said.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on Jan. 31 in Stratford, a shoreline town about 60 miles from New York City, according to NBC Connecticut.

A 55-year-old woman working on the Devon Bridge, which crosses the Housatonic River, fell through a hole roughly the size of a twin bed, the outlet reported, citing the Stratford Fire Department.

She plummeted about 50 feet before landing on a barge below, according to News12.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene using a fire rescue boat and were able to stabilize the woman, according to the outlet.

She sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Bridgeport, the Daily Voice reported.

The woman, who has not been named, is employed by a company contracted to repair the bridge, according to the outlet.

The Stratford mayor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from McClatchy News.
