Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager Debate Popular Birthday Party Trend

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on the 'Today' set.

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager tackled a divisive subject on the latest episode of Today: Goodie bag favors following a child's birthday party.

"I had my daughter's birthday party, and I forgot the goodie bag," Kotb, 59, began in the clip titled "Goodie bags: Yay or Nay?"

"Why?" Kotb continued, "Because we were at a bowling place, and I gave everyone an arcade card with money on it."

"They are lucky to get that," someone said off-camera before the mom of two went on, explaining that when it came time to wrap up the festivities, some of the little attendees made it known that they were expecting something physical.

"When everyone was leaving, a bunch of kids, because it's normal, they're used to it, 'Where's the goodie bag?'" Kotb recalled. "And I was like, 'Oh, we don't have one."

"We don't have a goodie?" she repeated, adding that the kids seemed "alarmed" and "startled" that they'd be going home without one.

Bush Hager reassured her co-host, saying, "If we're honest, we just get home and throw it away. If we want to be buried in garbage in the next 50 years, let's keep promoting goodie bags."

Kotb and her 42-year-old co-host started joking about the common items that kids often receive in favors, which include "a small slinky," "a stamp," and exactly "three crayons with the tiny bag."

"Come on moms, let's band together," Bush Hager quipped. "We're done with goodie bags!"

But they weren't done with the conversation, as the duo then criticized the option for "personalized goodie bags," saying, "No, no, absolutely not."

"I'm like, 'Woah,'" Kotb emphasized.

Today's editorial director, Arianna Davis, then chimed in, reporting that 55 percent of the people the NBC talk show polled were also against goodie bags–as were many online fans who sided with the two co-anchors.

"The internet’s divided! Where do you stand? 👇 #weretalkinaboutit," the media personalities asked viewers in the caption of the May 2 Instagram upload.

"To me, the arcade card WAS the 'favor' and that kid wasn’t raised right!" one top-liked comment declared.

"Agree with Jenna!" a different Instagram user exclaimed. "We don’t need more garbage to sort through at home."

"Absolutely hate goodie bags!" a third shared, adding that there shouldn't be a "prize" for attending a friend's celebration. "The deal is I feed your kid, entertain them and sometimes I am the only adult watching the kid for 2-4 hours in exchange for a gift for my kid. There shouldn’t be an extra prize…"

"This makes me feel better because my daughter 4th birthday next week and i decided to skip them!" someone else admitted.

"I hate junk in goodie bags too," another wrote before laying out a few suggestions for those who still want to offer kids favors. "So for my son’s party this year I did snacks in it, fruit snacks, individual bag of smart popcorn, etc."
