The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution lineup will forever remain one of the starlets of the tuning scene. Now, thanks to HKS in Japan, Mitsubishi owners with cars powered by the legendary 4G63 engine just got a serious upgrade. That’s because the tuning house has released a new block and stroker kit for the four-pot, which comes rated for 500 horsepower.

The DOHC variant of the 4G63 four-cylinder engine first arrived in Japan in 1987 under the hood of the Mitsubishi Galant. The motor was offered in both naturally-aspirated and turbocharged forms, and would find its way to the US market a few years later by way of the often overlooked Diamond Star Motors products. The engine wouldn’t find its spiritual home in the States until 2003 and the arrival of the Evo VIII, however. The pairing would help solidify the brand’s place in the hearts of speed seekers across the country, be that on gravel or at the track. Today, the Evo and 4G63 both carry massive fan bases, with companies like HKS continuing to develop new components.

The latest 4G63 upgrade from HKS is a rather serious offering, starting with an upsized and upgraded short block. Thanks to a 0.5mm larger bore and 8 mm longer stroke, the engine now displaces 2.3-liters. The new shaftless balancer also means that oil supply holes in the block could be made larger for increased cooling and flow rates. Customers can also order HKS pistons with nickel coated tops and Molybdenum coated skirts to reduce friction. That package also includes a billet crankshaft and H-beam billet con rods. HKS says the extra torque from the added displacement will allow for larger turbos, which is welcome for chasing power. That said, HKS doesn’t suggest exceeding 500 hp in order to preserve the engine long term. Torque should also be limited to under 435 lb-ft.

Customers will have to source their own top end components, but HKS does offer quite a few of those on their site as well. The short block package is compatible with all 4G63-powered Evo models through the 9MR. The loaded short block isn’t a cheap package, ringing in at around $12,000.That said, HKS are a known quantity in the tuning industry, and have been working on massaging and perfecting these powertrains from the beginning.
