Historically Black college in SC among nation’s best, new US News & World Report ranking shows

South Carolina has one of the 10 best historically Black colleges in America, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Claflin University in Orangeburg earned the ninth ranking out of 77 schools considered in the latest annual list. This is the 12th consecutive year Claflin has been ranked on the U.S. News top 10 historically Black colleges list.

“We are tremendously pleased with our rise in the U.S. News and World Report’s national ranking of the Top 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” Claflin President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack said in a Monday press release. “We are also extremely elated that this prestigious publication has consistently acknowledged our numerous accomplishments and achievements. Our success is a testament to the collective contributions of University administrators, faculty and staff, students, leal and loyal alumni, and other supporters.”

Founded in 1869, the 46-acre Claflin had a total undergraduate enrollment of 1,779 students in 2021.

According to U.S. News and World Report, it publishes the Best Colleges rankings each year to provide prospective students and their families with helpful data and information on factors such as graduation rates, social mobility and graduate indebtedness.

U.S. News & World Report used several indicators to determine the rankings, from graduation and retention rates to social mobility and graduate indebtedness.

To qualify for the best historically Black colleges ranking, a school must currently be listed as part of the White House and U.S. Department of Education’s Initiative on Advancing Education Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A school must also be an undergraduate baccalaureate-granting institution that enrolls primarily first-year, first-time students.

Here are the 10 best historically Black colleges in the U.S., according to the ranking.

  4. Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, LA

  5. Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA

  6. Hampton University in Hampton, VA

  7. Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL

  8. Delaware State University in Dover, DE

  9. Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC

  10. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC
