Historic! Hagerstown Flying Boxcars win season opener with no-hitter

Win or lose, Thursday evening was going to be historic for the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars as they opened their inaugural season in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball on the road against the York Revolution.

As it turned out, their performance on the field also was momentous as three pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the Fying Boxcars' 4-0 victory at WellSpan Park in York, Pa.

2024: Hagerstown Flying Boxcars schedule

Starter Parker Markell pitched six innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. He was relieved in the seventh by Domingo Jimenez, who worked two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Enrique Santana closed things out in the ninth, getting two strikeouts and a groundout after hitting the first batter he faced.

Hagerstown took the lead for good in the top of the first. On the second pitch of the game, Magneuris Sierra recorded the team's first hit, singling to left field. Abiatal Avelino followed with a double to left to put two in scoring position, and two batters later, Curtis Terry delivered with a two-run double to center.

The Flying Boxcars added two runs in the fifth. With the bases the loaded and one out, Terry and Eury Perez hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead to 4-0.

Hagerstown finished with nine hits, including three by Sierra.

Home opener: Flying Boxcars limit initial fan capacity

After three more games against the Revolution, followed by three games at the Lancaster Barnstormers, the Flying Boxcars will return to Hagerstown for their home opener May 4 against the Long Island Ducks at Meritus Park, the team's new downtown stadium.

The 126-game regular season runs through Sept. 15.
