Hillshire Farm Recalls Fan-Favorite Sausage in Multiple States
Hillshire Brands Company announced a recall earlier this week for nearly 16,000 pounds of blended meat and poultry smoked sausages due to the risk of foreign contamination.
The ready-to-eat packages contain one, 14-oz. rope of "HILLSHIRE FARM SMOKED SAUSAGE MADE WITH PORK, TURKEY, BEEF" and are marked with lot codes that are made up of an establishment number, line number, and time of production. Affected products are branded with lot codes "EST. 756A 20 19:00:00 through 21:59:59 and EST. 756A 21 19:00:00 through 21:59:59" with a best-by date of November 11, 2023, and were produced on June 14, 2023.
Affected products were shipped to retailers in several states, including California, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The parent company and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) were each notified of the problem through consumer complaints after finding bone fragments in the meat. One injury to a consumer's mouth was reported due to consumption of the product thus far, with no severe injuries or hospitalizations noted.
FSIS is concerned that some affected packages may be found in consumers' refrigerators or freezers and advises them to immediately discard or return them to the point of purchase.
Stop & Shop was also forced to recall tens of thousands of cases of perishable foods over the last two months after discovering that many products were not kept at appropriate temperatures prior to sale. That recall was expanded this past week. Frozen vegetables stocked at Kroger and Food Lion were also recalled due to a risk of contamination with Listeria.
