Hillsdale and Jonesville battle in cross-county showdown track and field dual

HILLSDALE — Track season for the Hornets and Comets kicked off with a dual on Tuesday afternoon at Hillsdale High School (full results can be found at athletic.net).

Starting with the boys 100-meter dash, Hillsdale senior Hunter Wilson got the win with a final time of 11.14. Senior Hornet Dawson Adams took second with a 11.45 and senior Stephen Petersen took third with a 11.85.

Hillsdale senior and Trine track and field commit Annemarie Moore took first in the girls 100 meter with a 13.45. Junior Megan Kast took second with a 13.48 and sophomore Charis Winn took third with a 14.32.

Moore would win again in the 200, this time setting a new PR time of 27.65 for the event. Taking second was Comet senior Brooke Sharp with a 28.44. Kast took third with a 28.68. Wilson also won the boys 200 race with a new PR time of 23.02. Adams took second with a 23.87. Hornet junior Dominick Coke took third with a 24.43.

Coke would win the three-Hornet race for the 400 meter. Coke set a new personal best time of 52.43. Hornet junior Miles brown took second with a PR time of 53.55. Kelton Phillip took third with a PR time of 57.93. Sharp would win the girls 400 race for Jonesville with a time of 1:03.40. Hillsdale freshman Kiely Kroa took second with a 1:07.48, a PR time. Hornet senior Ameilia Dietz took third with a 1:09.23 PR.

Over in the girls 800, junior Hornet Chloe Stalhood won in a sprint to the finish with sophomore teammate Abby Amburgey. Stalhood had a 2:55.18 final time and Amburgey took second with 2:55.66. Just behind the two Hornets was Comet freshman Keria Knight, who took third with a time of 2:58.36.

The boys 800 was just as competitive. Comet freshman Caleb Blonde battled Hornet senior and Trine track commit Nolan Grant to the finish. Blonde finished just ahead of Grant with a 2:09.03 time. Grant took second with a 2:10.73. Hornet freshman Logan Youngman took third with a 2:17.81.

Blonde would return to the winner's lane with a 4:58.40 final time in the 1600-meter race. Fellow Comet and senior Gavin Van Kampen took second with a 4:58.50, just behind Blonde. Comet senior David Fowler rounded out the all-Comet race in third place with a 5:12.21. There were no girls 1600-meter runners at this event.

Freshman Hornet boys hurdler Kaden Sorrell led the way with a first-place finish in the 110-meter race, a final time of 18.47. Comet junior Nathan More set a new PR time of 19.46 to take second. Teammate Reece Rundquist took third with a 19.65. The girls 100 hurdles were won by Hornet junior Meredith Bowles with a 20.57 time. Comet freshman Amelia Means took second with a 21.61. Comet senior Hallie James took third with a 22 flat.

The girls 300 hurdle race was won by Hornet senior Kelah Hodge with a time of 53.14. Bowles took second with a time of 56.92. Means took third with a time of 59.39. The boys race was won by Hornet freshman Evan Towne with a time of 45.35. Sorrell took second with a 47.08. More took third with a 48.48 for Jonesville.

The boys 4x100 meter relay team of Makinlee Parker, Carter Rounds, Ryan Marcavage and Jaren Trujillo won their duel with Hillsdale with a 45.60 time. The Hornet relay team of Petersen, Arnold, Thornsbury and Handy finished with a time of 46.22 (no girls 4x100 relay results).

The girls 4x400 relay was a race between three different Comet groups. The all-freshman team of Keria Knight, Kendahl Drake, Julia Mandrelle and Siliva Blackham won with a 5:17.82.

Jonesville would also compete against themselves in the boys race, with the team of Cody Udzik, Nicholas Fowler, Carter Rounds and Nathan More winning with a time of 3:50.05, about 1.88 seconds faster than the second group.
